Young Colly speech stars bring home the gold

What started as a small after-school public speaking club has quickly become one of Collarenebri Central School’s success stories, with students bringing home a haul of awards from their first-ever appearance at the Narrabri Arts Eisteddfod.

Members of the school’s public speaking program claimed five first-place awards, a second placing and a highly commended result, impressing judges with performances ranging from public speaking and poetry to monologues and dialogue in costume.

The students are part of the school’s Public Speaking Program, an extracurricular activity that meets every Thursday afternoon and is designed to develop communication skills, performance techniques, and confidence.

For principal Fiona Donnelly, the results were particularly impressive given the program has only been running for a few months.

“We started the group at the beginning of the year and it’s been very popular,” she said. “This is the first time students have gone beyond the school and competed in an eisteddfod, and we are very proud of their efforts.”

“They’ve been honing their skills by hosting our assemblies and other events, and they also hosted the Anzac ceremonies,” Ms Donnelly said. […]
