Yellowbelly Bourke shows good things can happen when community gets together

Yellowbelly Bourke has kicked off the NSW school holidays with action packed music and barbering programs at both Bourke and Brewarrina, dubbed Yellowbelly Vibrations.

The fun began on Monday April 14, with a morning of “Art of Rap” sessions at the Bourke studio, run by Hip Hop artist P Smurf and celebrated Malyangapa Barkindji rapper, Barkaa.

Also converging on Bourke were a small team from The Knox Studio in Boggabilla, and Nate Weatherall from Mad Proppa Deadly Studio in Armidale.

This led to a day of celebration and musical collaboration that started with a Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony from Bourke’s Uncle Phil Sullivan and culminated in an all-in jam. About 50 community members joined in, fuelled by a BBQ lunch.

On Wednesday the whole crew headed to Brewarrina for a two-day program sponsored by Brewarrina Shire Council.

Uncle Chris Boney welcomed locals and visitors with a Smoking Ceremony, and more than 300 people attended throughout the first day. 

On offer were free haircuts from the Yellowbelly Barber, and a musical program that included the Yellowbelly Band, rap performances from the Knox Studio crew, and a powerful session of rap and storytelling by Barkaa. […]
