Western Landcare NSW is made up of people from Landcare groups across Western NSW, and two women are encouraging others to come on board and help care for the Outback environment.
Mel Gates, formerly a journalist at Broken Hill’s Barrier Truth newspaper, is now Western Regional Landcare Coordinator and she has been on the road recently, travelling almost 2000 kilometres through our western region.
“I’ve definitely met many people, had a lot of conversations, and as the new Regional Coordinator, I feel like I’ve got a great understanding of what’s going on in the western region,” Ms Gates said.
“I went along to a Wild Dog Action Group AGM in Bourke Shire, and it ended up being a fun social gathering about what’s going on out Bourke way.
“It’s very dry north of Bourke and there were conversations about drought. Formally, it’s only the southern region that’s considered to be in drought but when you’ve got land holders buying feed, and have only had five millimetres of rain in 12 months, then you question, where is that line where land is officially considered to be in drought?
