Western Plains Rugby Union

Western Plains Rugby Union is heading into 2026 with some new competition rules and a renewed focus on the future of women’s rugby.

October’s AGM brought together representatives from all clubs across the zone to discuss key updates, including a new mercy rule, ongoing women’s tackle rugby debate, and plans for future representative teams.

A major talking point at the AGM was a motion from Cobar proposing the introduction of women’s tackle rugby in 2026. After a robust discussion, clubs voted 4–3 in favour of retaining the current Tri Tag format for another year.

Western Plains Rugby Secretary Angela Hanigan said the conversation showed how much women’s sport had evolved in regional communities.
