Western Councils take crime concerns to Premier

A delegation from western councils has met with Premier Chris Minns and Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon in Sydney to push for urgent action on youth crime, early intervention, and long-term diversionary programs.

Representatives from Bourke, Walgett, Brewarrina, and Coonamble Shires attended the meeting, organised by Member for Barwon Roy Butler, to present first-hand accounts of the challenges facing their communities.

Bourke Shire Council Deputy Mayor Sally Davis, who attended in place of Mayor Lachlan Ford, said the trip was “very worthwhile” and showed strong unity among rural councils.

“It was a really great catch-up,” Cr Davis said. “We are fortunate in Bourke that crime is down at the moment, but things go in cycles. We would like to see funding come through for programs to keep young people busy, especially heading into the Christmas break.”

Cr Davis said the discussion with the Premier and Police Commissioner focused on the need for meaningful early intervention, community-based alternatives to detention, and better support for families struggling to manage at-risk youth. […]
