‘We can’t do it alone’ — Walgett Council demands action on crime

Walgett Mayor Jasen Ramien has called on NSW Premier Chris Minns to visit the town, which is battling an escalation in criminal activity. Mayor Ramien has called on the Premier, Minister for Police and Counter Terrorism Yasmin Catley and newly appointed Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon to visit the town and hear first-hand from members of the community.
The call for action follows a shocking incident on Saturday at the Walgett Swimming Pool, where a female patron attending the pool with her children was held up at knife point and had her car stolen in front of children, parents and staff enjoying the long weekend.
The frightening incident unfolded in full view of families and Council staff, many of whom were left deeply shaken.
Mayor Ramien said a mother simply enjoying a swim at a public pool should never be threatened with a knife in front of her own children. He said Council staff and patrons who witnessed the event have been left traumatised, and support is being offered to all affected. […]
