Walking across Australia to celebrate life

Former Bourke man could soon hold the world record for the longest birthday. His birthday was earlier this month, and he intends to continue the celebration by walking across Australia.
But there is more to Steve’s mission than just a personal milestone. His aim is to remind men also entering middle age that there is a lot of life ahead of them, and a lot they can achieve and contribute – but they must take the first step.
“Most people think this walk is about fitness – it isn’t,” Steve said. “My dad died at 50 and this year I turned 50 myself.
“On 1 November, I’ll have lived the same number of days he did. The next day, I’ll live one day longer than he ever had the chance to, and that changes everything.
“So, on September 14, I’ll begin walking across Australia—not to break a record, but to prove that the best years of a man’s life don’t have to be behind him.
“The average 50-year-old man has 31 years left, and that’s kind of scary, and that’s not a lot of time.
“Men can use that to do two things – they can get the most out of the time they have left, or they can use it as motivation to add more years,” Steve said.[…]
