Walgett Australia Day Awards – Decades of community service rewarded


Being awarded the accolade of Citizen of the Year in Walgett Shire does not mean Ormond Molyneux is about to sit back and take a break.
Mr Molyneux, who lives in Lightning Ridge, shared the award with Colleen Edgar from Walgett and accepted the honour at Sunday’s Australia Day Awards.
A dedicated, long-term community volunteer, Mr Molyneux said he was humbled by the recognition.
“I don’t do this sort of thing for accolades and was very surprised to be nominated, let alone win,” Mr Molyneux said.
While Mr Molyneux has taken on many community roles over the years, there are two roles that stand out, and are unique to the small mining community.
“Maxine O’Brien and I run the Lightning Ridge Funeral Service, along with other volunteers,” he said. “We organise funerals and all the things that go with it. This is available for people who want it. We don’t chase after people but are available for the bereaved if they are in need. (…)
