Turnstar wins Enngonia Cup

Charleville trainer Les Baker had a two state doubles on Saturday with Deciduous winning the Morven Cup in southwest Queensland while Turnstar won the 1400 metres Dunk Insurance Enngonia Cup in northwest New South Wales.

Runner up to stablemate Deciduous in the recent Betoota Cup in Queensland, Turnstar started the strongly supported $2.80 favourite at Enngonia with Nyngan- based Wendy Peel in the saddle.

On a well-prepared dirt track, Turnstar was nicely ridden by Wendy Peel and after reeling in the leader Roll Up (Montana Savva, $3) Turnstar kicked away to win by over three lengths with another five lengths to the third placed Malarina (Jordan Quince, $9).

Earlier, Wendy Peel won the feature sprint, the 1000 metres Bourke Bowling Club Open Handicap, on Mon Pierre, trained at Wyandra, north of Cunnamulla, by Alistair Webb.

In an all-Queensland trained finish, Mon Pierre ($3.40) led throughout for a length win from Mistrey Emperor (Montanan Savva, $2.50 favourite) and Zouchase (Jordan Quince, $6).

Greg O’Neill also flew the flag for Nyngan as the winning trainer of Our Celebrity in the 1200 metres Bourke Steel and Hire Class 2 Handicap.[…]
