Tour de OROC raises $800,000 for Macquarie Home Stay

After cycling 740 kilometres around the western regions, the Tour de OROC cyclists have returned to Dubbo, celebrating their endurance and the huge funds raised – at least $800,000 – for Macquarie Home Stay.
The sixth Tour de OROC may have ended, but one “end” is still on the mind of Tour participant and Dubbo Mayor Mathew Dickerson`.
“I’m struggling a little bit to sit down at the moment,” he said. “That might have something to do with sitting on a little 10-centimetre seat for 740 kilometres. Councillor Dickerson said.
“Pedalling through the regions out to Lightning Ridge, Walgett, Brewarrina, Bourke, and Cobar tends to do a little bit of damage to the rear end.”
Despite the pain, Councillor Dickerson said the Tour de OROC was a fantastic event.
“A lot of great things happened as we rode around, and riders were very excited to be part of the fundraising outcomes,” he said.
“We changed the concept a little bit this year – previously we’ve tried to do very big days on the bikes, I’m talking about 220 kilometres which is pretty taxing on the body. What we found from previous events was that we covered big distances, and we saw lots of towns, but we didn’t see them for long.”
Councillor Dickerson said feedback from riders in previous events was that they’d prefer to see some of the towns for a bit longer.
“This year, we cut the distances back,” Councillor Dickerson said. “The days covered anywhere from 100 to 160 kilometres which meant that riders were getting into towns around lunchtime and still had time to be tourists.
“There was the opportunity to see the Back O’Bourke Exhibition Centre, the Jandra paddle steamer, out to a Lightning Ridge underground mine and to the Brewarrina Fish Traps. From a tourism perspective this change in program was a huge success.” […]
