Time for leadership and adventure

Its breathtaking terrain tests even seasoned hikers, making the Warrumbungle National Park the perfect place for 23 young leaders to dig deep and discover themselves.

Lightning Ridge Central School students rose to that test earlier this month when they smashed 10km and 8km walks, earning incredible views over the park and the knowledge they were there for themselves and each other in challenging circumstances.

Wellbeing teacher Damian Flaherty and Special Education teacher and SRC coordinator Caitlan Poli accompanied 19 primary and secondary captains, Student Representative Councillors and four Special Education students to the Warrumbungle National Park Environmental Education Centre, where principal Wes Leedham had some tough tasks in store.

“The centre ran a two-day leadership course, with activities and team building exercises,” Mr Flaherty said.

The students hiked through the park, stopping to learn and discuss different ways of demonstrating leadership, from authoritarian ways to carrot-and-stick and more motivational styles. […]
