Thumbs up for Spar Supermarket rebuild
If all goes to plan, Bourke will have a sparkling new Spar supermarket by Christmas.
Owner of Spar Supermarket, Chandra Kollipara said the development application for the rebuild of the premises, which burnt down last December, had been approved by Bourke Shire Council.
Chandra is now waiting for the construction design drawings, and once they have received approval, he is hopeful construction will begin by July.
“It’s good news for Bourke and good news for me and the staff as well,” Chandra said.
“We are hopeful construction will be completed by the end of October or the beginning of November and that means we will be able to open the doors for trading in time for Christmas.
“I don’t have concerns about being able to get staff as our previous staff are still being paid and are keen to get back to work,” he said.
When the Spar building was destroyed by fire on 27th December 2021, the long process of determining the cause of the blaze and processing the insurance claim began.
The insurance company determined it was an accident, but the clearance to begin rebuilding took several months. While some staff had to leave Bourke to find alternative employment, most were kept on the books and will return to their former roles once the doors reopened.
