Taniell earns kudos for promoting the shearing industry

Taniell Pokarier-Barker was described as an outstanding role model for youth and the wider community at the Brewarrina Australia Day Awards, where she was recognised as Brewarrina’s Young Citizen of the Year.
Through the LuSid Shearing business she formed with her partner Kyle Brown, Taniell helps employ, train, and inspire local people, offering valuable skills and employment opportunities.
Growing up in Goodooga and currently living in Weilmoringle, Taniell has lived in the Brewarrina Shire for her entire life.
Enthusiastic about promoting the wool industry, she created the annual Brewarrina Quickshears competition as a way for shearers to take centre stage and earn some prize money for their efforts.
“When I first thought about the idea of holding an event, it was mainly about promoting the industry and getting some shearers out and about,” she said.
“My partner and I went to a lot of Speed Shears events ourselves, and eventually I was asked whether I wanted to organise one in Bre, and it went from there.
“Luckily the first one in 2023 went off pretty smoothly, because last year everything that could go wrong, did go wrong.”
Not discouraged, Ms Pokarier-Barker is now busy planning this year’s Brewarrina Quickshears. Busy with the hot weather shearing season and organising shearing teams, her Young Citizen of the Year nomination was a big surprise.
“I was initially told by someone else I had been nominated,” she said. “I had actually also nominated someone for the awards, as part of a different category, so it was a funny situation, and I was a bit confused at first.” (…)
