Tall tales and plenty of carp hooked at Brewarrina

There were plenty of stories about the ‘one that got away’ and plenty of carp pulled out of the Barwon River over the weekend during the annual Bre Big Fish competition.

Organisers estimate one tonne of feral carp was pulled out of the river, with the competition as much about clearing the carp from river as landing the biggest fish on the hook.

Brewarrina Fishing Club President Kelsie Lovett said she was very happy with the turnout for the competition, with more than 490 registrations, including almost 200 children, and 1,296 carp caught with the biggest weighing in at a whopping 5.32kilograms.

“Getting more than 1,200 carp out of the river system is really good for us,” Kelsie said.

“No cod were caught, but we hope they’re still out there - they’re very rare to come by. There were just over 100 Yellowbelly caught, which was excellent, and they were all released back into the river.” […]
