Students excel at CWA public speaking contest

The annual public speaking contest held at Bourke last Thursday (23 May) challenged school children in the district to give their best effort in the composition and presentation of speeches.
The Far Western Group of the CWA hosted the contest at the CWA building in Sturt Street – and invited schools around the district to enter two contestants from years 3 and 4 and from years 5 and 6.
President of Bourke CWA Pam Simpson said the competition was very well contested this year with some impressive performances.
“It’s very important to encourage young ones to gain experience in public speaking,” Mrs Simpson said.
Students from Bourke Public School, Cobar Public School, Enngonia Public School, and St Ignatius School Parish School entered in the hope of winning a coveted prize in the Far Western Group Public Speaking Contest, which has a long history of recognising budding public speakers.
Event Master of Ceremonies and former Bourke Shire Mayor Wally Mitchell said it was great to see the impact of this competition on those kids as they’re being listened to and appreciated.
“This experience is incredibly valuable for these kids who, after all, are tomorrow’s community leaders,” Mr Mitchell said.
“The students this year improved, and that’s what it’s all about.
“Next year they will come back in even better form, after these experience,” he said.
Former St Ignatius student and prior CWA Public Speaking winner, Isaac Ford, recently won first place on the state level, taking out the prestigious Lawrence Campbell Oratory Competition, in Sydney.
Congratulations to this year’s winners: 1st Place to Evie Cain (3/4 at Cobar Public School), 1st Place to Taylor Ford (5/6 at Cobar Public School), 2nd Place to Paul Turnbull (3/4 at Bourke Public School), and Liv Cain (5/6 at Cobar Public School). Tom Preisig (Cobar Public School) along with Maisie Coyne and Daly Old (St Ignatius) were all Highly Commended.
