Rob and Chris Bowman are visitors from Turramurra with Roger Sanderson and Karen Sanderson from Manly, and last week they were among the very few tourists enjoying the attractions around the far west.
Like many travellers, fuel costs and supplies was a concern but once they hit the road, the group found their fears were unfounded.
“We started in Sydney, went to Tamworth, then Moree, Lightning Ridge, to Bourke, and now we’re heading back through Gilgandra and Mudgee,” Rob said.
“We were concerned about fuel at one point because the car is diesel, but we haven’t had any problems at all,” he said.
The visitors were also concerned about the lack of fellow travellers and the impact that would be having on the economies of small communities like Bourke, Brewarrina, Walgett and Lightning Ridge.
“We wanted to spend money in country areas, because we could see businesses were struggling. We’ve been buying things like paintings and memorabilia everywhere we go,” Roger said. […]
