Hundreds of students from 18 schools across western NSW descended on Bourke’s Davidson Oval last week for the 29th annual Ronny Gibbs Sevens competition.

Commencing in 1995, the Ronny Gibbs Sevens celebrates its 30th anniversary next year.

Played at Bourke in August each year, the gala day tournament attracts rugby league and netball participants across two age divisions – under 15s and Opens – from towns like Bourke, Brewarrina, Walgett, Lightning Ridge, Warren, Cobar, Broken Hill and Nyngan competed in two grades of rugby league and netball.

Nyngan High school came up trumps this year – winning both netball grand finals against Cobar and both rugby league grand finals against Cobar and Broken Hill.

Rugby League legend Ronny Gibbs ran the tournament again this year and said that the day was a great success.

“It was a great day, and the kids played with plenty of spirit,” Ronny said.

“We had plenty of kids and they had a great day – I want to thank Bourke High School for running the canteen and the Bourke Shire Council for preparing the ground for us.”

Ronny said that while the tournament is going from strength to strength – more funds are needed keep it going in future years. […]
