Road challenges in Bourke Shire

Bourke Shire Council is facing one of its biggest infrastructure challenges in recent years, with extensive flooding causing major damage across the shire’s roads, bridges, and farmland.

Bourke Shire Council Mayor, Lachlan Ford said the northwestern part of the Shire had been hardest hit.

“We’ve got significant damage across that northwestern area of our shire,” Councillor Ford said.

“There are bridges with the approaches washed away and a bridge that’s moved slightly on its supports – it’s pretty full-on!”

Councillor Ford said that council staff were all working hard to remediate the damage as quickly as possible.

“Essentially, Council is seeking to get roads open as soon as it can. With 40 to 50 kilometres of rural roads that’ll need re-sheeting, it’s no small job,” he said.

Councillor Ford said that he understood that delays in road repairs have an economic impact for locals. […]
