A call has gone out to guarantee reasonable food prices in remote Aboriginal communities.

Lynda Edwards, Coordinator of Financial Capability at Financial Counselling Australia is originally from Bourke and has a passion for ensuring food security in remote communities.

“The people that are mostly affected are First Nations people,” Ms Edwards said.

“People should be able to get access to really good food at a reasonable price and at the moment that’s not easy.”

A coalition of consumer and Indigenous groups is calling on the National Indigenous Australians Agency to better protect vulnerable residents in remote areas.

The organisations have welcomed the proposed National Strategy for Food Security in remote Aboriginal communities, but they want the recommendations strengthened to guarantee fair prices and adequate supply of essential food and grocery items.[…]
