Polygonum Swamp Road named as preferred free camping site at Bourke

Bourke Shire Council has committed to progressing investigations into developing a freedom camping site on Polygonum Swamp Road near the old North Bourke Bridge, to better manage tourism and to provide safer, more suitable facilities for self-contained travellers.
Freedom camping, also known as free camping, refers to the practice of camping in a location that isn’t a designated or formal campground, usually on public land, without paying a fee.
Councils decision follows various meetings, including a Councillor Workshop held on April 8, where several potential locations were considered.
Bourke Shire Council General Manager, Leonie Brown, confirmed that a strong consensus emerged from councillors around the Polygonum Swamp Road option.
“The Council ultimately determined that it wanted to progress investigations into freedom camping on Polygonum Swamp Road; that came out very loud and clear during discussions,” Mrs Brown said.
The Polygonum Swamp Road option involves the use of an area approximately 240 metres long by 4 metres wide of gravel surface on the northern side of the road leading up to the old North Bourke Bridge. […]
