Police are reappealing for assistance from the public as inquires continue into the discovery of a body in a burnt-out vehicle near Bre last month.

Emergency services were called to the Kamilaroi Highway Brewarrina, at about 5.15am on Sunday, 28 September 2025 where an SUV was found alight.

A body was found inside the vehicle once the fire had been extinguished by Fire and Rescue NSW.

A crime scene was established and an investigation commenced under Strike Force Mayville. The task force includes detectives from Central North Police District and the State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad.

On Thursday, police attached to Central North Police District executed two crime scene warrants at separate premises located within Barwon Four Reserve Brewarrina and seized a number of items which will be subject to further examination.

Central North PD Crime Manager, Detective Inspector Andrew Barnes, said “Due to the circumstances surrounding the discovery of the body we are treating the death as suspicious.”

“We have identified the deceased person and notified their next-of-kin, but we are appealing to the public to come forward if they have information which could be relevant to this investigation”.

Anyone with information they believe can assist police is urged to contact Bourke Police on (02) 6870 0899 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
