Plenty of candidates for council elections
Residents of Bourke, Brewarrina and Walgett Shires will go to the polls to elect their local councillors after a good number of nomination for all three councils was received by the NSW Electoral Commission.
At the close of nominations on Wednesday 14 August, 14 candidates were nominated for election to the 10 positions on Bourke Shire Council, at Brewarrina there are 11 nominations for 9 positions and at Walgett, 13 nominations have been received for nine positions.
At Bourke, nine of the current sitting councillors have renominated – Grace Ridge, Sally Davis, Victor Bartley, Bob Stutsel, Cecil Dorrington, Lachlan Ford, Nathan Ryan, Sarah Barton and Sam Rice.
Five new nominations have come from Maxime Nina, Pat Canty, Frank Kerr, Kylie Baty and Scott McAdam.
Bourke’s current Mayor Barry Hollman has stepped down and is not running for reelection in September.
This will be the first contested election in Bourke Shire since 2016, after the COVID-delayed 2021 election, when there were just 10 nominations for 10 positions.
At Brewarrina, there are 11 nominations for nine positions – including three newcomers Michael Pederson, Belinda Colless and Jason Morton.
Eight of the nine sitting councilors at Brewarrina have been renominated including current Mayor Vivian Slack-Smith and current Deputy Mayor Angelo Pippos, plus Tommy Stanton, Isaac Gordon, Mark Brown, Douglas Gordon, and Noel Sheridan.
Current Bre Shire Councillor Donna Jeffries has not renominated for election.
A total of 13 nominations have been received for election to the nine positions on Walgett Shire Council – including current Mayor Jasen Ramien and current Deputy Mayor Greg Rummery.
Other sitting councillors that have renominated at Walgett are Michael Cooke, Alf Seaton, Jane Keir, and Daniel Walford.
At Walgett, seven nominations have been received from newcomers – from Katie Hook, Jo Coleman, Pauline Kearl, Mary Purse, Doreen Peters, Scott Bailey and Debra Rose. […]
