A new mobile community pantry has officially launched in Lightning Ridge, giving residents access to heavily discounted groceries while creating another place for people to connect during challenging economic times.

The initiative is a partnership between the Lightning Ridge Community Church and Anglicare, with the mobile food van visiting the town every second Wednesday.

Pastor Kurt Langmead said the program had already proven successful in other rural centres and would provide practical support for people feeling the pressure of rising living costs.

“We have launched our new mobile community pantry here at Lightning Ridge Community Church, in partnership with a great organisation called Anglicare,” he told Nathan Filmer on Outback Radio 2WEB.

“We’re really excited about getting this new initiative off the ground, providing low-cost groceries that help people save money and connect with their local community when times are tough.”

The pantry will operate fortnightly from 10.30am to 11.30am, with Anglicare’s mobile food van travelling from Moree to service the community.

For $20, residents can fill an Anglicare grocery bag with a selection of food and household essentials, with the contents typically valued at around $70 to $80. […]
