Open day for green thumbs

Walgett Garden Club

Sharing the challenges of gardening in difficult conditions and promoting friendship through a love of growing things was the focus of an open garden at ‘Somerlea’near Lightning Ridge on Sunday.

The Walgett Garden Club held an open garden event at the home of Paul and Sally Weeks, 20kms from Lightning Ridge and 50kms from Walgett.

Distance wasn’t an issue for the 30 garden lovers who attended.

“We had a good turn up of girls from all over the place; from Lightning Ridge, Goodooga, and Cryon among other places,” Ms Weeks said. “Some people travelled quite a way which is great for our club.”

The Walgett Garden Club is relatively new, having been established in 2019 with activities interrupted because of Covid. Ms Weeks said the club is getting back on track.

“We have ramped up again this year. We try to have four open gardens a year plus guest speakers,” she said.

“We bring people together in the community – our members deal with great distances and rural challenges so it’s nice to get together and share information on gardening in our soils.” […]
