New Bourke doctor stresses need for holistic medicine

Dr Shay Taylor is the new member of the team at the Bourke Aboriginal Corporation Health Service, part of the re-build of the service to better serve the community.

BACHS is in the planning stages of a new building which will accommodate a greater range of services, and Dr Taylor said there were exciting developments already underway that would deliver better health care across the BACHS footprint.

Dr Taylor brings with her a passion for remote and indigenous communities and a deeply held belief that as a doctor, her job is to get people off medication and into healthier lifestyle choices to improve their health and longevity.

“The majority of my career has been in rural and remote medicine in Central Australia and the Top End, and it is an area of health I have a genuine passion for,” Dr Taylor said.

“I have wanted to come to Bourke for a long time. The achievable travel from Newcastle to Bourke enables me to commit to Bourke for the long term. It is important that the community have stable medical practitioners.

“At this stage, we are working on foundational projects to bring in the best we can to service the people of Bourke.

“We now have permanent regular doctors here at BACHS, an exciting new addition is our Nurse Practitioner Lesley Salem.

“It means when people need someone, they can come to the door, and we will always have someone here. It is our mission to provide excellent medical care and not turn anyone away through lack of appointments.”

“We have several services that are run here at BACHS alongside our medical team. Patients have access to RFDS dental, psychologists, hearing teams and an array of visiting specialists to name a few.” […]
