Mountaineer comes to the western plains

Bourke Australia Day Ambassador on January 26 2024 is Andrew Lock, OAM, the most accomplished high altitude mountaineer in Australian history.

Andrew is the only Australian, the first person in the Commonwealth, and just the 18th man ever, to climb all fourteen of the world’s 8,000 metre mountains.

His achievements include eighteen summits of those 8000 metre peaks, including Mount Everest (twice), more than three times that of any other Australian, placing him in a select group of the world’s best mountaineers.

Additionally, Andrew accomplished the first ever Australian ascent of six of those mountains, a record that can never be broken.

In 2010 Andrew was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia for Services to Mountaineering.  In 2015 he was awarded a Commendation for Bravery for rescuing three collapsed mountaineers from near the summit of Mt Everest in 2004. […]
