Miss B Having, aka Bradley Benjamin, has taken out the title of Potch Queen 2022 in front of a huge crowd at the Outback Resort Hotel on Saturday night.
This year there were all kinds of weird and beautiful contestants on the stage.
Initially, there were to be only five contestants, but two late entrants signed up after the show had begun.
The judges this year were two new teachers in town – Josie Hughes, and Mikayla Richardson. Neither of the judges had met any of the contestants.
The audience also had the chance to dress up with an opportunity to win prizes.
This year’s theme was 50’s Rockabilly, and best dressed prize went to Catherine Sisa and Lyall Boulton.
Angie Newman, this year’s organiser, said she was thankful to all the sponsors, volunteers, security guards and the Outback Resort Hotel for helping to make this night happen.
A huge thanks to the fellas who dared to have a go!
The consensus was that the night was a huge success, and plans are already in place for next year.
Lightning Ridge holds an opal and gem festival every July, and one of the highlights is the Opal Queen Ball, where the ladies compete for the title of Opal Queen.
The Potch Queen event is a parody of the Opal Queen.
Potch is what precious opal is formed on, which can be grey, black, or white. Most opal mined is potch; it is common opal with no colour.
It is a time for the men of the Ridge to go all out also, with a difference. They dress as women, beards, and all.
All the proceeds from the night will go to the Lightning Ridge Easter Festival.
