Memorials remembered in Bre council upgrades
Seventeen kilometres north of Brewarrina on the Goodooga Road, just a few metres before the Hospital Creek Bridge, is a small memorial with huge significance to the community.
The Hospital Creek Memorial is dedicated to the men, women and children who were killed in one of the biggest mass slaughters of Aboriginals in NSW.
The horrific event took place in 1859, and the monument was put there by the Bre Local Land Council in 1995 in memory of the people massacred.
As part of the $43.5 million schedule of works, which will be undertaken by the Brewarrina Shire Council, there will be an installation of a new Memorial area. This will consist of seating, parking, and signage area at Hospital Creek, which will beautify the area and supply information to visitors on the history of this site.
Brewarrina Shire Council General Manager David Kirby said that the site was of huge significance to First Nations people.
“It is also important in helping our country acknowledge the past,” Mr Kirby said.[…]
