Several local organisations across the Barwon region can cross items off their wish list after securing grants from the Community Building Partnerships program, which supports infrastructure projects delivering “positive social, environmental, and recreational outcomes.” Nearly $500,000 was shared across the region to benefit community groups.

In Bourke, the PCYC was successful in obtaining $18,910 to install extraction fans and air conditioning in the kitchen. Todd Bailey, Manager of Bourke PCYC, said the funding announcement was significant.

“When you are cooking every summer for 20-plus kids, it gets pretty hot and steamy in the kitchen,” he said.

“It’s quite a relief that this project is going ahead, not just for us but for other groups who use the facilities as well. The kitchen is used on a daily basis so its fantastic news.”

Walgett’s PCYC also received support for their audiovisual youth hub, with $15,000 allocated to improve the space for local young people.

The Enngonia Rural Fire Brigade received $12,100 to build a new equipment storage facility. The funding was welcomed by the Operations and Learning & Development Officer for the Barwon Darling Zone, Dave Hagarty.
