Lightning Ridge Area Opal Reserve — Miners urged to report subsidence at Coocoran

Miners and visitors to the Lightning Ridge Area Opal Reserve are being urged to help identify abandoned mine subsidence as part of an ongoing effort to make the Coocoran reserve safer for everyone.
Lightning Ridge Area Opal Reserve Manager Dave Sullivan said reserve staff were working closely with local miners to identify areas of mining-related subsidence on the public reserve before referring them to the NSW Legacy Mines Program for rehabilitation.
As sites are reported, staff inspect and document their location, depth, size and any associated public safety risks before forwarding the information to the program. Additional areas continue to be identified as inspections continue.
In the meantime, hazard tape is being installed around known subsidence areas to make them more visible and help reduce the risk to miners and visitors.
Mr Sullivan said community involvement was essential in ensuring potential hazards were identified quickly.
