The NSW parliamentary committee on Law and Safety held public hearings in Bourke on Monday and Tuesday as part of its inquiry into community safety in regional and rural communities. 

The inquiry is investigating the drivers of youth crime in the regions, as well as specific actions the NSW government can take to support best practice prevention initiatives and improve community safety.

The meeting heard from several local organisations, including Maranguka, the Bourke Tribal Council, Bourke Shire Council, Brewarrina Shire Council, Walgett Shire Council and local police.

Committee Chair, Edmond Atalla MP, said the first day in Bourke was a very frank discussion which opened the eyes of the members of parliament on the committee to what is happening on the ground at Bourke. […]
