In Bourke Brewarrina and Walgett, a jam-packed program of local events to celebrate NAIDOC Week lived up to the theme of Keep the fire burning! Blak, loud and proud!

In Bourke, Councillor Victor Bartley stepped into the place of Mayor Barry Hollman to take part in proceedings.

“Unfortunately, the Mayor was away on council business in Canberra, but I was very honoured to step into his place. It was great to do the official address and the crowds were really into it,” Councillor Bartley said.

“There were lots of information booths around in Central Park from different community groups and all the events across the week were well attended. It’s a huge celebration and a way for the community to come together.”

“If NAIDOC Week can get the community to come together as one and not as individuals, they can do the anything. The week went well.”

Brewarrina Shire Council General Manager David Kirby said it was great to see the community enjoying the festivities.[…]
