Health student bus tour heads west

A new generation of health students will get a firsthand look at rural practice when the Go Rural bus tour rolls into Bourke, Brewarrina, and Walgett during the month of June 2025.

The initiative, organised by the Rural Doctors Network (RDN), gives early-degree university students the chance to experience life and health services in regional communities – with the ultimate goal of encouraging them to return after graduation.

Charlene Noye, Director of Multidisciplinary Programs at the North West Academic Centre in Bourke, said the tour is a practical way to connect future health professionals with outback towns.

“The idea is that they go on this bus trip and see a lot of the rural towns,” Ms Noye said.

“They stop in, have a bit of a look around, meet people, and the hope is that when it comes time for them to select their placement, they might actually choose to come back.”

The students, studying medicine, nursing, allied health, and public health, come from a range of universities. […]
