Have your say on the Barwon-Darling Water Sharing Plan

The Barwon-Darling draft Unregulated River Water Sharing Plan is out for consultation and the government is asking for input.

Executive Director of Water Planning for the NSW Department of Climate Change, Energy, Environment, and Water Gisele Howard said creating the plan was complex.

Plans include setting limits on how much water can be taken, protecting water resources for the environment, basic landholder rights and cultural needs and providing secure, legal, and tradeable water access rights.

It also sets out how much, where and when licence holders can take water.

“We’ve got Water Sharing Plans around the state that come up every 10 years for review, and it’s time for the Barwon Darling Plan which is really important,” she said.

“There are webinars, face-to-face meetings and one-on-one sessions that people can book, and we would really like people to have their say.”

“The Barwon-Darling Plan is right up there in the top few in priority, and it’s also one that has connections across the northern basin.

“People have a strong interest, and there’s lots of complex issues. We want people to have a say so we can get it right in terms of the water sharing rules.”
