Goodooga’s Deontai leaps onto the state stage

Goodooga Central School student Deontai Williams has taken on some of the best young athletes in NSW, finishing among the state’s top 15 in both high jump and long jump.

The Year 10 student qualified for the NSW Combined High Schools Athletics Championships in two events after an impressive performance at the North West Athletics Championships.

Goodooga Central School Head Teacher Secondary Studies Sam Crook said Deontai initially competed in the Under 16 boys high jump and long jump at the North West event, finishing first in high jump and second in long jump.

The championships brought together students from across a vast area of NSW, including Tamworth, Armidale, Glen Innes, Lightning Ridge, and Walgett, plus students from independent schools.

“He came first there in high jump and second in long jump, which is a massive achievement when you consider all the schools that participated,” Mr Crook said.[…]
