Good attendance for Anzac Day at Brewarrina

The citizens of Brewarrina turned out in force for Anzac Day this year, with bigger crowds, more families and a strong showing from local school children giving the day a renewed sense of momentum.

Deputy Mayor of Brewarrina Shire, Vivian Slack-Smith said the shift was noticeable, particularly at the Dawn Service.

“It was a really good turnout for the Dawn Service,” Councillor Slack-Smith said. “Some people have said it’s been a bit quiet in the past, but this year there were quite a big crowd.”

The early morning service at the Brewarrina Information Centre was held under clear skies, with the sunrise adding to the atmosphere, before crowds moved to the Brewarrina RSL for breakfast where organisers were caught off guard by the numbers.

“Last year they had a lot of food, and it wasn’t all used, but this year they almost didn’t have enough, which is good news if you look at increasing attendance,” she said.

By mid-morning, around 40 to 50 people had gathered again at the Information Centre gardens for the main service, held at the town’s War Memorial, which was relocated from the park several years ago to prevent damage. […]
