Did you know there are 222 Vinnies shops in NSW, and one is in Bourke! Do you have what it takes to become a volunteer?
Jane Terry is a retired Bourke resident who, in her own words, ‘manages to fill my days very well.’ However, Jane also takes time to volunteer at the Vinnies local store.
“It’s very important to have volunteers in our communities,” Jane said.
“Why Vinnies? I started just over a year ago. They had a wonderful older lady called Pat Mann, who’s recently left town to be with her family in Queensland. She was the only op shop volunteer at the time, and Vinnies would have closed without her. I just couldn’t let that happen.”
Jane said that growing up, her mother regularly shopped at Vinnies for her five children, and in later years, Jane followed her lead.
“It’s such a great service. Even as a fully employed working person, I loved op shopping because you’re putting your money in the hands of a local charity,” Jane said.
“In small communities like Bourke, the money goes towards helping other people. Vinnies assist with providing clothing and some household goods when needed, but basically, it’s just a good, affordable place for families to shop, and the money goes towards welfare programs that are run by St Vincent de Paul.” […]
