Girls fire up for hands-on career experience

Bourke and Brewarrina students swapped the classroom for fire trucks, pumps, and protective gear when the ‘Girls on Fire’ program rolled into Bourke for a hands-on introduction to careers in emergency services.
Female students from Bourke High School and Brewarrina Central School took part in the program, delivered by Fire and Rescue NSW and supported by the Educational Pathways Program.
Bourke High School students involved were Harper Rice, Chloe Robb, Letaliah Burford, Queneshia Orcher, Anastasia Cubby, Taylah Barker and Shaunee Elwood.
The day was held at the Bourke Rural Fire Shed, where students tackled activities ranging from fitness and relay challenges to learning about fire response equipment and operating pumps.
For Year 9 student Harper Rice, the experience had an added personal connection.
“I really enjoyed the day interacting with everyone as we got to use the equipment together,” Harper said.[…]
