Fun Day with serious message on men’s health

Bourke Public School

A very special event was hosted by Bourke Public School last Thursday, as part of the national Men’s Mental Health Week.

The event was an open invitation to all male students at the school, male family members and community members to come and be a part of the activities.

Male staff at Bourke Public School also hand delivered invitations to multiple community organisations to come and join in.

CEO of the Bourke Aboriginal Corporation Health Service, John Fetuani, delivered an address to the students and guests, reminding them of the importance of regular health checks and self-care, before the youngsters took part in some fun and games promoting the importance of physical activity, sportsmanship and team work.

The activities included basketball, league tag, obstacle courses, sack races, wooden spoon races, kicking competitions, ‘rob the nest’ and coding technology activities.

There was a serious message behind the fun though, with the Men’s Mental Health Week highlighting the serious statistics which indicate men in the bush have a higher rate of mental illness, including depression, anxiety, and addiction, than men in the cities. {…]
