Rugby League

The Ronny Gibbs Sevens rugby league event in Bourke has become the highlight of the sporting calendar for schools across the Far West. Now in its 29th year, the Sevens league and netball gala attracted students from 10 schools from across the region, who headed to Bourke’s Davidson Oval for some top-level contests, as well as important skills training and off field education.

As much as the football and netball training, a vital goal of the Sevens event is the focus on school attendance, and the motivation to take part in the on-field sporting action has had a positive impact in the classroom over the almost three decades the event has been held - and that’s just what Ronny Gibbs has been aiming for. He knows too well that sport is an avenue to success and stability in other parts of a young person’s life and has dedicated his post-playing career to the wellbeing of young people in the bush.
