Empowering youth through rugby league

NSW Rugby League Far West Junior Community Engagement Coordinator, Poi Birtles was on the ground in Bourke last week, spreading her love of the sport among local young people.

Ms Birtles works tirelessly to foster connections and bring rugby league to the remotest corners of the NSW outback.

She currently lives in Coonabarabran and says her journey into the rugby league world has been quite a ride.

“I moved to Australia to pursue softball, but eventually, rugby league grabbed my attention, and that led me to the elite level,” Ms Birtles said.

“I’m focused now on advocating for junior rugby league, especially in remote communities, where we can make the most impact.”

For Ms Birtles, sport has always been a family affair.
