Duck Day set to make a splash at Lightning Ridge

Lightning Ridge is preparing to go completely quackers, with rubber duck racing, flipper-clad competitors and an Australian record attempt all part of a new community event planned for October.
Lightning Ridge Central School P&C will hold its inaugural Duck Day on Saturday, October 31, with organisers hoping the event will become a regular fixture on the town’s calendar.
P&C member Kurt Langmead said the day had been designed as much as a community celebration as a school fundraiser.
“It’s not just a fundraising event,” Mr Langmead said. “We are planning a community day that will be memorable and maybe turn into an annual event.”
At the centre of the festivities will be the Great Doolie Duck Derby, reviving memories of rubber duck races once held through Lightning Ridge’s stormwater drains.
Mr Langmead said participants will be able to buy a rubber duck and race it down the drain, with water brought in especially for the event and a professional race caller on hand.
