Disaster averted in Bourke CBD

A major fire threat in the Bourke Central Business District was averted on Saturday when the Bourke Fire Brigade and other emergency services were able to extinguish an electrical fire at the rear of an Oxley Street shop.

Just after 2 o’clock on Saturday afternoon fire crews were alerted when a resident in the rear apartment of 27 Oxley Street smelt smoke and raised the alarm.

Bourke Fire Brigade Captain John Milgate said the fire could have been a major disaster for the main street of Bourke.

“Our fire crews worked really hard and fast under extreme conditions to knock the fire down and render the area safe,” Captain Milgate said.

“There was an extremely high heat load within the building and zero visibility as crews worked to find and extinguish the fire before it could spread.”

Captain Milgate said that the fire could have spread very quickly and caused significant damage to the northern side of Oxley Street if the fire had not been located and  extinguished as quickly as it was.

“If the fire had got into the roof cavity, it could have spread to nearby shops and taken hold big time,” he said. […]
