CWA demands action on domestic violence

The NSW Country Women’s Association state conference in Coffs Harbour has issued four urgent requests to government to stem the tide of violence against women.

CWA State President Joy Beames said that the issue was past crisis point, and that the conference had produced a list of reforms for government to implement.

“We unanimously passed an urgency motion raising four points to help counter rising rates of domestic violence,” Joy said.

The urgency motion was the first item considered by conference delegates and included a call for an amendment to the NSW Bail Act to change the presumption of bail provisions to a default against bail for domestic and family violence offences.

The motion also called for sustainable funding for frontline victim support services – and services that target perpetrator risk factors and a real-time system to record, track, and share information on perpetrators across states. 

“We dealt with domestic violence first to show just how important this issue was to members who want to see immediate action on domestic violence, and we’ll be strongly advocating for the measures we endorsed,” Joy said. […]
