Crucial weir meetings need community voices

Bourke and Walgett Shire residents are being urged to attend local public meetings about The Fish Passage: Reconnecting the Northern Basin Project being held by NSW Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW) at the end of July.
Proposed changes in this project include lowering of weir infrastructure which its feared could significantly impact water security for communities.
Louth resident and long-time river advocate, Garry Mooring says the stakes are high for locals who live and work along the river system.
“From our perspective, the outcome is that there will be no lowering of the weirs,” Mr Mooring said.
“When you come down to 100 millimetres on that weir, the water that will be flowing through won’t have connectivity deep enough to reach the next weir pool, which is over 100 kilometres away. The fish won’t be able to migrate anyway.” […]
