Cricket — Memories of playing for Dry Lake

Back in the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s and 1990s, the Dry Lake Cricket team based at North Bourke often ruled the roost when it came to Bourke District Cricket competitions.
They played against teams like the Royals, Fords Bridge, Snake Gully, Royals, Myamblers, Golf Club, Colts, Cavaliers and teams from Wanaaring (Paroo), Louth, Enngonia and Hungerford.
Most of these proud clubs have folded over the years and only exist in the memories of their ageing former players.
Dry Lake no loner fields a team, but the memories remain, and some important memorabilia is now available to see on the wall of the North Bourke Hotel.
On Saturday afternoon about 50 past players and supporters of the Dry Lake Cricket Club converged on the Northy Hotel to relive old stories and to reunite for possibly the last time.
Former Dry Lake players, Barry Glasson of Narromine and Tony Gadsby of Moree organised the reunion and were supported by many old Dry Lakes players and supporters, including Nicky Brown, John Russell, Mick Davis, Kenny Thorne, Troy Hayman, Col Kiley, Bernard Davis, Steve Ward, Trevor O’Mally and Greg O’Shannessy.
Two faithful Dry Lake cricket scorers in Patty O’Mally and Nea Costello came along with old newspaper clippings of past exploits, score books dating back 60 years and other memorabilia, including caps and t-shirts.
Some children of former players who have passed on attended – including Blake McDonald – the son of James McDonald.
Some old foes came along including former Cavalier Geoff Costello and former Colts captain Peter West.
Organiser Barry Glasson said that he was really pleased with the numbers of people who came along to celebrate days gone by at the Dry Lake cricket matches. […]
