Countback to fill council vacancy

The process to fill a vacancy on Bourke Shire Council is now formally underway following the resignation of Councillor Maxime Nina.
Bourke Shire Council General Manager, Leonie Brown, confirmed she had received Councillor Nina’s resignation effective 9 February 2026 and had acted within the required timeframe to notify the NSW Electoral Commission.
“Councillor Nina’s resignation creates what is referred to in the Local Government Act and Regulation as a casual vacancy.” Mrs Brown said.
“After a resignation, I have seven days to notify the New South Wales Electoral Commission which has been undertaken.”
Under the countback method previously adopted by Council in 2024, preferences from votes for Cr Nina from the 2024 local government election will now be redistributed among the four unelected candidates from that election – should these candidates choose to participate in the countback election.
