Cool cats in the summer heat

Although the brutal temperatures may be behind us for now, there’s no doubt the heat will be back before summer’s end – and it’s time to think about how to look after your pets during a heatwave.

Cats, like dogs, don’t sweat, and they can’t tell us when they’re overheating. It’s up to us to recognise the signs.

Charlotte Cavanagh from Kidman Way Veterinary Clinic said there were some simple solutions for keeping your cat comfortable in the hot weather.

“Cats are close to the ground so they’re getting radiant heat as well as the heat that we’re experiencing,” Charlotte said.

“Their water’s getting warm and like us, they like to have a nice cold drink. So, there are some things to consider about keeping them cool.

“Because they don’t sweat, they pant, so they’re relying on their respiratory system to get rid of their heat.”

Charlotte said a cool place and plenty of cold fresh water was a simple way to keep your kitty comfortable. There are other dangers lurking for our feline friends though, including an immunodeficiency virus. […]
