Complete Tilpa history released

The town of Tilpa now has a definitive written local history, after the launch of a new book by two Tilpa district historians – Michael McInerney and Colin Middleton.

Mr McInerney, moved to Tamworth eight years ago, but returned to Tilpa on the October long weekend for the Back to Tilpa event, to launch his latest book, co-written with another local Tilpa man, Colin Middleton.

The inaugural Back to Tilpa event was a big drawcard for Mr McInerney, as he got to catch up with old friends and witness any changes to the district since he left.

“Some of it is exactly the same as I remember it, to the extent that a couple of wires that used to be hooked to a Flying Doctor radio are still hanging off the side of one of the buildings,” Mr McInerney said.

“But a lot of things have happened in the last eight years and what really impressed me over the weekend was the number of the younger generation who have become so active in the community.

“They have really picked up the reins to help the community – Tilpa is probably more active now than I remember it.”

In the past, Mr McInerney was a familiar voice on Outback Radio 2WEB, regularly presenting Tilpa Talk, where he spoke on community happenings and included a report on the state of the local roads. […]
