The raising of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags, traditional dancing, and the cutting of a commemorative cake officially launched a week of celebrations across Walgett Shire on Monday as the community marked the 50th anniversary of NAIDOC Week.

Community members gathered on the lawn outside Walgett Shire Council Chambers for a ceremony that began with a Welcome to Country by Aunty Faye Green alongside Junior Aboriginal Education Consultative Group members Richard Dennis and Bianca Henry, whose reflections helped set the tone for the milestone celebration.

Councillor Jane Keir, speaking on behalf of Walgett Mayor Jasen Ramien, said the anniversary was an opportunity to reflect on the significance of NAIDOC Week and the strength of the local community. […]
